At PBDW, we believe that the interplay between new and existing architecture is a catalyst to invigorating work. With a portfolio ranging from dynamic designs for new buildings to the sensitive restoration of historic landmarks, both our individual projects and our office as a whole are continually exploring and responding to this dichotomy.

Our designs are as unique as our clients. Whether incorporating a museum, community center, or performance space—or all of the above—we work closely with all involved to design a space that upholds an organization’s mission and values while transforming its program and public face. Our success is demonstrated by a portfolio of award-winning work and by an ever-increasing number of repeat clients.

Whether it be a small capital improvement or a large commercial development, we understand the need to leverage real estate investment to its fullest architectural and economical potential. By tailoring our work to the specific needs of each client, we create solutions that both embolden commercial presence and efficiently fit within projected means for a successful return on investment.

Integrating the diverse, often conflicting program needs of schools into memorable, joyful places is our special expertise. Over 40 years of experience translates into a deep knowledge of the particular challenges our clients face. We combine this knowledge with rigorous analysis to create vibrant, flexible, sustainable spaces that reflect the multi-faceted needs of faculty, staff, and students.

Fifty years of dedication to New York City’s built environment – particularly its most intricate and significant historic buildings – has earned us a respected place in the field of historic preservation. Our goal is to reveal, explore, and enhance the original expression of the architecture to ensure that these built treasures continue to inspire future generations.

New York City’s challenging urban sites, zoning and regulatory requirements, and complex financial structures can pose challenges for residential projects. We have the experience and vision to craft creative designs that transcend the typical solutions. Whether traditional or contemporary in design, our multi-family developments and single-family homes warrant the same meticulous attention to detail.

PBDW is a pioneer in green building, having designed the first LEED certified school in New York City, one of the first multifamily Passive Houses in Manhattan, and a Net Zero Energy dormitory in the Berkshires.

We see sustainability as a keystone of architectural design and imperative to contemporary life.
