Over several years and multiple phases, PBDW has worked with the Church of the Holy Name to modernize its infrastructure, improve its accessibility, and to create a new Chapel and Social Space to serve its community.
Our first phase was to undertake a major infrastructure upgrade of the hundred-year-old building. The installation of a heating plant and new building services has allowed the Church to be self-reliant for the first time. Following this we created two new accessible entries; one to the Church basement, and the other to the main sanctuary. The sanctuary ramp is an elegant procession from the corner of 96th Street and Amsterdam Avenue up a glass-enclosed path to the Narthex vestibule.
Entering through the iconic red exterior doors and the newly restored inner doors allows the same experience as entering through the main entry doors on Amsterdam Avenue.
The entry ramp down to the basement leads to the new Social Space, a multi-purpose room served by a commercial kitchen and designed to accommodate multiple events, including classes and community events. An intimate chapel is open 24 hours a day for worship when the church is closed.
